Assassin's Creed + Hockey = WTF?

The launch of Assassin's Creed 3 just happened in Montreal. Montreal is also the home of one of the initial NHL teams, The Canadian. What is the link between those two? None, but that has not stopped Ubisoft to make one of their own.

Ubisoft has partnered with Canadian lead Goaltender, Carey Price, to show off 3 models of goalie masks that mix both the Canadian and Assassins Creed 3 themes. Yeah it is truly one of those "What the Hell" moments. The public will be able to vote for their favorite of the 3 masks that will then be made in 31 copies to be sold in auctions. But I feel I can't complain since the goal of this partnership is that the profit will be given to a charity of Mr. Price's choice.

But then there's this voice in me that tells it all. What the hell? Is that some poor marketing joke? Not only the NHL is in lock out this year, Assassin's Creed III's focus is on the American Independence war, but it is put on Quebec's hockey team, named Canadian.  Not to mention Quebec struggle for independence in the past 30 years have been really put to the test. It is also in Quebec that the 1812 war got the American back to their borders (and resulted in a status quo after British troops were sent back to Quebec as well). So this deal seems a total contradiction to me... but I still believe it should be made. I'm not there to stop anyone doing any crazy things. God knows I've done my share of weird mixes in the past.

Here are the 3 masks in question. You can vote here.

Xbox SmartGlass Is Out

Want to add some features to your Xbox and Android phone?

Xbox SmartGlass is exactly what Microsoft is offering. I must admit that the rumors I heard was that the SmartGlass would be a Windows Phone exclusive and while I believed it might be true, I thought it was a really bad move. Well I was wrong! They did release it on the Android Platform this morning.

The main features of the App let you use your Android 4.0 device as a remote to navigate your console, the full keyboard for messages and other input. It lets you check the stores, change your avatar and plenty of other features.

If anyone wants to test it and write a review, we will be pleased to publish it as I don't have an Xbox 360 anymore. [Editor's note: I have one and tested it, it's cool but I will wait for games integration before writing a review of it - Lanarchy]

VG OST Pick Of The Week: F-Zero - Big Blue

Ahhh, F-Zero. How many hours I spent playing you with my brother. It's one of the timeless games, one you could play today and have as much fun as back in the day.

I chose Big Blue for this week's OST, one of my favorite tracks from F-Zero. Enjoy !

Dark Souls DLC Requires You To Kill Bosses To Unlock It

This... this is how DLC should be. I am not surprised at all that From Software is the company doing this. To be able to play the DLC, you will need to:

- Defeat Hydra at Darkroot Basin
- Defeat Crystal Golem at Darkroot Basin and save Dusk of Oolacile
- Defeat Crystal Golem at Duke's Archive and get Broken Pendant
- Touch Black Fog at lake in Darkroot Basin where you defeat Hydra

Isn't that FUN ? All gaming companies should strive to offer this kind of additional gameplay. I know some will complain ("I bought the damn thing, I should have access to it !"), you know the kind, those entitled casual "gamers". I am happy that there's at least one developer requiring us to earn our content.

This Is What Horrible PR Is Like

Europe Playstation owners are mighty pissed right now, and for good reason. The new PS3 patch did something no one thought Sony would ever do. Place an advertisement in the XMB. There is now an icon for the game Singstar sitting on top of the Game category, bigger than any other icons and you can't delete it or move it. It's there and there's nothing you can do about it. Naturally, people started to Google for a way to get rid of it and they end up on Playstation Europe Official's blog page, where they are essentially told by the PR Rep, Nina Scherer, to suck it up.

Here are some of the most WTF replies I've ever seen from a Public Relations person (you can click on the first image to see it on its original size and then click through to see all of them one by one):

As someone says later in the thread:

She then comes back to apologize for some of her comments:

But then another questions if she really means "We will definitely take all of your feedback on board".

I seriously hope this is not the kind of image Sony wants to have for its Customer Service Relations.

EA Forces Wii U Owners To Use Origin To Play EA Games Online

You just knew this was coming, didn't you ? EA announced that to be able to play their games on Wii U, you will have to use Origin.

Ok, EA, here's what. GTFO with your service. For starters, PC gamers by and large hate it, and for good reason. It hogs resources like no other. One of my friends for example, had to close Origin to get normal performance back from his computer and he's a techie gamer. He knows what he's doing. Even when not playing BF3, he had to close Origin because it was making his other games lag. Didn't know it was Origin doing it until he closed it.

Secondo, I do not like how you're trying to shove Origin down our throats. How, in any way, will using Origin help with Wii U online gaming ? It is just an additional hurdle to just be able to power up the console and play.

I like some of your games, EA. I'm not a total hater. Mirror's Edge was amazing. Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and SWTOR were some of the best gaming experiences I've had. Why though, must you always do stuff that enrages gamers ?

I will never understand you, EA.

Review : Retro City Rampage

Platform : PS3 / PS Vita (Cross Buy) and PC/Steam
*Soon Available on : WiiWare and XBLA
Developer : VBlank Entertainment
Price :14,99$
Type : Top Down Shooter
Time played : 6 hours / Not finished yet

At first glance, this could look like another game made in 8-bit graphics for simplicity.  That couldn't be further from the truth. It's a jewel of reference and satire to the 80-90's era from the beginning to the end.  The game has not even started that you can enjoy those references. Retro City Rampage, or RCR is a reference to River City Ransom, a great NES game. The art on the cover makes reference to Robert Zemeckis' Back to the Future Series. The game itself is a complex stew of so much reference that it requires a lot of skills to be able to make it into such a cohesive game, but this strength might also be a weakness.

If you have not a clue of what all those references means in there, you will definitely not enjoy this game as much as someone who does.  It's always enjoyable to stumble upon a quote such as "It's Letter Time"  taken from Video and Arcade Top 10 Canadian TV show and understand that reference. If not, you just wonder why it's there, at that place. While the game is surely enjoyable, the 15$ price tag is kind of high for this type of game... Here is some example of just a few of the references you might or might not know. Can you explain where they come from or what they mean? Note that I have taken more than 100 screenshots of those references so far.

Nicholas Picholas was the host of V&A Top 10

You got Story Missions that let progress in the crazy story where you want to become a super criminal. It also gives power ups and get you through many of the game mechanics.  The missions often use humour to get you through. For example there's a Chasing mission you get in every GTA like games. You need to follow someone in car without being spotted. When it starts, you tell yourself that it's so slow you might as well walk and walking you go. While pursuing the car, you must get coffee along the way so you won't fall asleep of boredom. You also get Arcade Challenges that consists in killing or breaking as much stuff as possible in a limited time.  This gives you the chance of uploading your score to the Leaderboard for bragging rights with your friend.

Now about the game mechanics.  It plays mostly like a top down shooter. You control the character with the left analog stick (or d-pad, for a retro feel) and shoot in any direction with the right analog stick.  I guess PC version will use AWSD and mouse to do so.  You can jump and pick up object and throw them as well. Finally you can get in cars, bike and other transports to move around town. There is a lot of stores where you can customise your character and buy weapons, tools, restore health,  and get power ups. Cheat codes (That's retro too) are written all over the places on wall for you to find. In addition to this, there's hidden items to find like Hidden Packages.

There's a Free Play mode as well where you get to move around town without any story missions, full of cash to buy everything you want. It's just a fun way of killing time and get those trophies as well.

Conclusion :

It's definitely a fun game, but its true strength is its melting pot of references. It's easy to understand and to play. It might not be worth the current 15$ price tag for everyone, but the more you have been into games, the more you'll get value from the references and the satire in the game. If you own it on PS3/PS Vita, know that it's a Cross Buy/ Cross Play game, so that adds  value to the game as well. You pay it once and can play on both system. There's a cloud save function that lets you continue your game from a system to the other without any pain.

VG OST Of The Week: XenoGears - The One Who Is Torn Apart

For this week, I selected my personal greatest video game of all time, XenoGears. Often in the game, during special story events, this track plays in the background. I will always remember it. This one, and another I will post another week :)

Digital Distribution : Lost in Paradise. Play Store (Android)

Most people with a cell phone own a Smart phone. Most people with a smartphone own an Android phone. This is mainly because of the huge number of phones with the Android OS.

What is interesting is that Android phones, like computers, let you install apps from any sources. This makes them open to digital distribution platforms of all kind from well known distributors such as Amazon, to underground markets such as Aptoide.

In this article, we will focus on Google's own market now called the Play Store (before it was simply called Android Market), but you'll see that I bring the Pros and Cons of multiple markets.

Pros:

Open for business!
The fastest growing market has reached over 600,000 unique apps (NOT counting Tablets vs Phone apps and Lite Vs Paying apps as multiple apps). It has all the apps and games you need and aside from just a few iOS exclusives apps, you've got pretty much everything that is available on there, or something similar on the Play Store. The fact that it is fairly open for anyone to develop and bring their apps and games to Android means the library of original IPs, big commercial titles or simply emulators from Mame, ScummVM to the PSX and N64 are all there.

There's also an app for that!
Every time an Apple fans says : "There's an App for that" I usually answer, is there an app for downloading torrents directly to you phone ? They stay speechless. For gaming purposes, I actually hooked a phone with HDMI out to a TV, and used an app that lets other phones connect as different game pads. We could be a bunch of people playing emulators with Virtual game pads on our phones. On Android, the platform is open enough to do pretty much everything, and if you root your phone (something that is not prohibited, but still voids the warranty) you get access to even more apps goodness.

Free for All?
More than 65% of the apps and games are free. This has two positive effects. First, you can make pretty much everything with your phone without spending a single penny. The second one is that it brings competition so prices have to be low or promotions get really aggressive. I paid for Dead Space and Sims 3 for a big 0.10$; Angry Birds, completely free. Galaxy On Fire 2 was originally 10$ on iPhone, it dropped to 1$, but still is free on Android (but requires a Tegra chipset).

Account driven, no matter the number of devices.
Android is on so many devices that this makes value to everything bought. There are many game consoles in the making, from room consoles like Evo 2 or Ouya, micro computers like FXI CottonCandy, or handheld gaming devices such as the Archos GamePad (that is actually a 7 inch tablet with full physical controls and mapping tool) or the Android MG, you know your games can follow you on any future devices you buy. In addition, the market easily handles multiple accounts on one device. So when those consoles do hit the market, the whole family will be able too share their whole library. That's always a plus for the wallets.

We'll talk about those devices in later posts.

Cons :

Getting lost is easy.
There are so many games and apps that it is hard to find that particular app amongst all of them.  While with greater skills you can find games and apps that suit your needs, you often have to refer to external sources to see what you might have missed. And for the average users, they'll be missing out on a lot of cool apps for sure, like Crackle that lets you watch free movies and TV shows, and is totally legit.

Where is that app I purchased... You bought a new device and want to load that game you've been playing last year but don't remember the name... Well you can browse your downloaded apps but you can't search or filter them. I have to browse a list of over 200 hundred apps, most of them were free ones I wanted to test, to find that one app I forgot the name but knew I bought.

Clones are worse than zombies.
The fact that almost anyone can publish on the Play Store also leads to having a bunch of apps and games that are quite similar. While it gives you choice it also opens the door to poor quality and crapware.

Many devices, many problems.
The different screen size and resolution, the different processor and RAM amount, the different internal or external memory are all factors that make games work on one device but not another and can lead to instability and phone crash... Not cool.

Many markets? Needs management!
If you use multiple markets (ie: the Amazon and Android store), you might want to keep notes of what was bought and where.

Selling point.
While having lots of free apps and games on the market, we could wonder how can someone make money. There are many ways to achieve this goal, but the one commonly used on android is publicity. Banner ads are pretty much everywhere.

Conclusion:

Android digital distribution got something right: Quantity of games and apps. You can get a decent dose of original games and big titles without spending a dollar. Of course, you'll better start learning the best ways to find and keep up with everything you want, because it's not optimal for the common user. If you have no problem navigating through clones full of ads, you will enjoy what you can find.

Frobishers Says Coming to America And Other Free Vita Games

Platform : PS Vita
Developer : Platform Software Innovation
Price : Free
Release date : Oct. 23 2012
Type : Mini Games

I could say Frobishers Says is Sony's new WarioWare. In fact, it really is. The game will be the 7th free game available on the PS Vita.

This free game has been released in Europe earlier this year.  While it got relatively decent reviews, you must keep in mind that this is mostly a fast, party oriented game.  If you played Wario Ware, you understand what I mean.  If you've never played Wario Ware, well pick this game up as it will be free when released on Oct. 23rd.

Frobishers Says Stir my Soup

This is another free game on PS Vita. So far there are about 6 free games, but only one supports Trophies. That is Treasures Of Montezuma Blitz, a Bejeweled-kind of game that adopts a Free-2-Play model.

Froshibers Says : Play my Stupid Videogame!

The other 5 games are  :
Treasure Park : A social game that plays a bit like Minesweeper
Zen Pinball offers 3 free tables, and a multitude of DLC.

Augmented Reality games:
FireWorks : A game where you must touch the fireworks at the right time.
Table Soccer : A turn-based soccer where you flick the screen to move, pass, and shoot.
Cliff Diving : Make a splash by jumping up a cliff into water.

Developer Talks About PS4

was going through my daily dose of news gathering when I stumbled into an interesting comment from a developer on the Official Playstation blog.

The developer is Alexey Menshikov Beatshapers, maker of BreakQuest. BreakQuest is a Minis game and can be played on PS Vita, PSP, and PS3.

When someone told that Beatshapers should start focusing on bigger games (instead of PS Minis), his answer seems quite revealing. He states that they are shifting to PS Vita/PS3 games and aiming for PS4.

Whatever that means it sure seems that even for devs the PS4 is coming sooner than we might expect.  The fact that it has been posted on Official Playstation's blog is not a small deal. We know that the big console companies often make sure to filter any comments on future consoles.  This one went through like butter in the pan.

Regarding the other part of the comment, talking about an announcment in the beginning of 2013, I won't expect much. They do have an unannounced Minis still in development so that might be it, but who knows...

Last Sprint : Extra Life And 7 New Games

Last Sprint as the Extra Life event takes place this Saturday Oct. 20th. It's now or never to make a donation for Operation Enfants Soleil, even if it's only 1$. You can donate via PayPal or Credit Card.  For the last sprint I added 7 games for you to choose, getting to a grand total of 90.

So far I've raised 100$ of my objective of 120$. Thanks to three extremely generous donators. I still have 20$ to raise, but let's bust the roof. I am giving donators something in exchange of every 5$ donation : The right to choose a game I'll play for 1h from every game I own. The list will be given at the end of this post.

It's not too late to help!

First might be the easiest, but also the most important :
Making a donation to "OpĂ©ration Enfant Soleil" is easy and fun : follow the link SUPPORT ME on my Extra Life page lets you donate via PayPal or Credit Card. A tax receipt is given right away.

Remember, for every 5$ you can choose a game that I will play for one hour. If you don't want to choose a game you don't have to. Don't restrain from making a donation because of that. If you don't know what to choose, you can let me choose for you, or I can guide you according to what you like (leave a comment or contact me). Once your donation is recorded, just leave a comment here, on my Extra Life profile page or by any other way you may have to reach me.

The second way is to join the gameathon.
Joining the team still lets you choose the child support organisation you want to raise money for. It's 24 hours straight up of games. The games you want, the platform you want and where you want (like in your living room, ain't that great?) follow this link and Join the team : You can play from your own home, or come join me at my place on the 20th. I got plenty of consoles to please about 4 people. (2 PS 3, Onlive, 2 NDS, 1 PS Vita, and Android phones).
Join here

The third way is to share this blog page and challenge friends and family to donate or participate. The more, the merrier.

The fourth way is to watch the Live Stream on YouTube or Hangout on air (Google plus) on Oct. 20th 2012 starting at 8h00 am Eastern Time up until 8:00am on Sunday the 21st.  Look for StainedPupil on YouTube, or wait for the official link when broadcast starts. During the live stream, donation will still be opened. What will be fun is that viewers can send me challenges in exchange for a donation if the challenge is completed.

IGN For Sale ?

Gamespot is reporting that IGN could be going up for auction. Yes, that IGN. According to the source they got from Wall Street Journal, IGN's owners (News Corp.) are working with investment bank Allen & Co. on an auction to sell IGN's network of video game and entertainment sites, following a year of failed efforts to produce a sales deal.

The rest of the article is as follows:

"According to the report, News Corp. publicly stated its intention to sell IGN Entertainment after news that it was preparing to restructure its internal publishing and journalism assets, separating them from its media and entertainment businesses.

News Corp. bought IGN in 2005 for a price tag of $650 million (a deal that also included other sites, such as GameSpy.com and TeamXbox.com), but now hopes to sell the network of video game and entertainment sites for around $100 million.

According to the report, Break Media and SAY Media are among potential buyers for IGN, although sources close to News Corp. told the paper that other potential bidders could include private equity funds.

Sales negotiations were affected by turnover at both IGN and News Corp., with the departure of IGN chief executive Roy Bahat in August, and the resignation of News Corp.'s chief digital officer, Jon Miller."

Being a great fan of IGN and GameSpy, I hope they will both be able to continue doing their thing and this will just be a change of ownership.

Skyrim's Next DLC To Feature Dragon Riding, Return To Morrowind

Ohhhh, that one's nice. There are rumors floating around that the next DLC for Skyrim, named Dragonborn, will let us ride dragons and there's also talk that we will see ourselves return to the land of Morrowind.

Apparently, data miners have found files appearing to be animations of the character flying a dragon, and casting spells. How cool is that ?

Also, they found updated markers for Telvanni, Miraak Temple, Raven Rock, Solstheim and Castle Karstaag. That could mean we will return to Morrowind. Even though the game has these zones already, they are rudimentary and not fully developed. Seeing an update to those files is reason enough to think that yes, Morrowind could be the next chapter for Skyrim.

New types of armor were discovered, too. Bonemold, Chitin, Nordic and Stahlrim.

Finally, there are PS3 pieces of code, so maybe... maybe the problems with PS3 and DLC are over. Let's hope.

The DLC is named Dragonborn and since Zenimax Media (Bethesda's parent company) registered the copyright for this, all signs point to this being real.

PSN Plus Offer : Oct 16th

Another week, another freebie for PSN Plus members.  It's a big week so hang on tight.

This week's free game has a small personal story attached to it.  I went out for a beer with a friend last week. We usually talk about many things including games. Now he told me "Have you played PayDay"? My answer was : "Wasn't that like a weird FPS where you heist banks"? That was a too simplistic answer for him. It got him going, telling me about the game for more than an hour.  I came back and wondered, do I buy it right now?  It itches me, but last time I almost bought a game (Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World) it went free on PSN the week after. Well my luck strikes again! Pay Day : The Heist is this week's free game. Expect a review in the upcoming weeks.

This adds to the Beta access of Playstation All-Star Battle Royale.  If you are familiar with Super Smash Bros, well this looks similar to it.

PSN Plus members will also get early access to The Unfinished Swan for 14,99$. They called it a First Person Painter and it started as a school project.

007 Legends gets a Day 1 digital release and a 10% rebate.

Finally, something everyone can benefit from. Massive discounts on a bunch of Halloween and Horror oriented games, but PSN Plus members get an extra discount. Go check the market, there will be a section for all those games. For example, Costumes Quest Complete Bundle can be grabbed for 3,75$ or inFamous Festival of Blood for 2.50$.

Enjoy your games.

Playstation All-Star Battle Royale Beta Tomorrow

It is official, Sony's blog just announced that starting tomorrow, Oct. 16th, every PSN Plus Members will be able to get into Playstation All-Star Battle Royale beta. This game is a clone of the Super Smash Brothers series from Nintendo, with Playstation characters instead.

Those who are not Subscribers to PSN Plus will have to wait until October 23rd to have access to the beta and start the brawl. Unless you own a PS Vita! Playstation Vita owners will also have access to the beta tomorrow.  It will support full Cross Play, so you'll be fighting those who are on the PS3 as well.

Review : Starhawk Single Player Campaign

Platform : Playstation 3 exclusive
Developer: LightBox Interactive and SCE Santa Monica Studio
Price : 39,99$ On PSN including multiplayer. Free for PSN Plus member (Single player only)
Type : 3rd person shooter
Status : Completed in less than 5 hours

Image take from Wikipeida. All rights reserved to it's rightful owner.

Starhawk is the second game of this multiplayer driven franchise. Unfortunately, I will only focus on the Single Player campaign because that is what I was able to play.

The story tells the tale of two brothers that used to work as miners of Rift Energy. After an Outcast attack, both brothers got exposed to the energy and while one mutated into an Outcast and became this game's nemesis, the other was saved with a device that keeps him from turning into one of the enemy. You became a gun for hire that protects Rift Energy mining sites that are getting more attacks then ever from the Outcast, that are now lead by your brother. Really, there's nothing more in there.

The campaign spans over 8 missions. The maps all looks like small scale open world and offer plenty of space to build structures.  For every mission, you are given indications on how to achieve the next goal. Indications like "Build some turrets to defeat the next wave". Structures are unlocked exactly when you need them and often you are shown where to build them. You probably won't find any challenges as soon as you understand the strongest structure combinations. There's not much room for replayability as you'll mostly do the same thing over and over again.

Structures play a major role in Starhawk. You can see this as like the buildings in any RTS, minus the management. They come prepackaged with weapons and there's no need to upgrade or send in troops.  You want help, you can build a beacon that sends in troops. You want a sniper, build a watchtower and go get the weapon in it.  You want to defend all that, turrets make a good defense. There are 9 different structures available.  But you'll often have access to about 5 or 6 in any missions.  Building costs Rift Energy that is obtained by killing Outcasts or destroying barrels besides Rift Energy sources.

You also have a bunch of weapons and vehicles to help you out.  Weapons are the standard variety you find in most shooters : A pistol you'll use for about 2 minutes, an automatic rifle, a shotgun, a sniper rifle, a rocket launcher, explosives, plasma cutter, a knife for instant melee kill, and a few more.

The biggest part of the game is how it mixes on foot combat, vehicles, and aerial dogfights.

The first vehicle you'll get is a motor bike that can jump. Very agile, it will let you go everywhere, really fast. It does not offer much protection, but it can get you from A to B, and that is sometimes crucial to get by quickly.

The second vehicle you will use is some kind of jetpack. It will let you propel upward for a few seconds, until you deplete the fuel that will automatically refill once on the ground again.

The third vehicle is a 2 seats + 1 turret buggy.  It lets you get around the map faster, gives you some extra protection and firepower.

The last one is the most impressive : The Hawk. The Hawk is a Transformer. It is mainly a mech that can be transformed into a plane for fast travel and aerial combat.  The Hawk comes with its own set of weapons to take on other Hawks, big creatures or a massive group of outcasts.

Image Rights goes to : http://whatculture.com

Conclusion :

I would have never paid for the Single Player campaign, but the game mechanics will translate into enjoyable multiplayer matches. The building aspect makes dynamic battlefields that will change every combat. The campaign feels no more than a long tutorial and does not let you feel you control the battlefield.  You are better off buying the Multiplayer portion only (for 19,99$ on PSN) and save the 20$ if you are not a PSN Plus member... unless you want those trophies so bad.

Digital Distribution : You Only Get What You Give. Humble Bundles

While the Humble Bundle distribution is quite standard, download the full game and play, it is their business practice that is completely different from others.

In Digital Distribution, you often shop in a library of games, each with a fixed price.  The Humble Bundle goes the other way around. It offers you a fixed package of games for a limited time (Indie games mostly) and you set the price you are going to pay for it, even a small 1$ will get you a bunch of games.  The other difference in the Humble Bundles is that you decide how your money is spread between the different workers : The developers, charity or Humble Bundle inc. for the distribution.

Example of the content of a Humble Bundle

The Pros:

The Price is Right :
Spending the amount you consider right is what it's all about. Even if some pay 1$ for 8 great Indie games, others will pay above 50$, even 100$ to support their great effort and because they have more money than most of us.

Free yourself from DRM :
Games are made to be played, and games from Humble Bundles are DRM free, meaning you can install them on all your computers or other supported OS. Usually the games support Windows, Mac OS, and Linux. They did sell a bundle that was Android friendly once.

The Cons:

Triple A is not only for meat :
While the concept of the Humble Bundles are to distribute Indie games, you won't find AAA titles such as the big Square-Enix, Blizzard, Activision and other publishers games.  That is not that the Indie games are not good (in fact they are pretty good usually), but it sure is not a market that an addicted gamer can rely on.

Where's the market :
There isn't any. In fact once you bought your Humble Bundle, a link to the downloadable files will be sent to you.  You can also register an account so you can retrace your bought bundles. Don't expect to go shopping as well, Humble Bundles are a limited time offer and only one bundle is sold at a time.

Gaikai's New Website Teases Upcoming PS Releases On Its Service

We know Gaikai (one of the two big cloud-gaming services, the other being OnLive) was recently bought by Sony Computer Entertainment, but we haven't got much information yet as to what they're going to bring to the PS family. Well, their new website might be teasing some PS3 games we could be streaming soon, like Killzone, Uncharted, God of War, LittleBigPlanet and inFAMOUS. The other images are too blurry for us to know the game they are representing.

This could also mean nothing, because Gaikai now being a Sony member, they can show whatever Sony franchise they want, regardless of if the platform's going to host it or not. Still, we're quite interested.

Know what the best would be ? Complete PS1 and PS2 library. That might not happen as there are so many IPs and publishers would need to all get on board but hey, one can dream ? Maybe in the future.

VG OST Of The Week: Punch Out - Fight Music

Ahhh... Punch-Out. One of my first memories of gaming, along with Kung-Fu, and Mario and Zelda. Punch-Out's music was amazing at the time and in my opinion, still is today. I will use the training theme in a later post, but this week... the Fight music.

Playstation Network Store Gets A Redesign

Sony has officially released the first screens of the upcoming PSN Store redesign. It really looks good in my opinion, and the new features sound great too.

- Games, Movies, TV all have their own sections
- PS3, PSVita, PSP also have their own sections so if you only want to see PS3 content, you can
- Screen scaling so if you play on a SD TV, the screen will auto resize
- Slick new black background
- Smart search function, understands abbreviations and misspellings
- Filtering by content type, price, peripheral support
- "Hero" concept, featuring known high-profile characters with new game releases
- Search brings all content, including Themes, DLC, Demos, Full Game Downloads, Screenshots, Movies, etc

The new PSN Store redesign will be released on October 17th in Europe, and October 23rd for the US/Canada.

The Dark Side of the Industry: Former The Secret World Lead Designer Speaks Out

We all know The Secret World hasn't been doing too great lately, despite great reviews and a million or so beta registrations. The game ended up selling just over 200,000. We're not often privy to information from the actual people making the games, but this time we have the Lead Designer explaining what happened, and some sad truths about the industry we all love so much. Have a read, this is very interesting stuff.

A special thanks to my personal friend Jonathan for the tip.

Gamesindustry.biz interviews Blizzard's Rob Pardo

Gamesindustry.biz has an interview up with Rob Pardo, Chief Creative Officer at Blizzard Entertainment. It's an interesting outlook on Rob's life, starting as a game tester for Interplay and how he ended up at Blizzard to become game designer and ultimately, CCO. He doesn't mention it in this interview but for those who might not know, he was also leader of one of the best EverQuest guilds at the time, <Legacy of Steel>, prior to his hiring at Blizzard. Along with Jeff Kaplan (who was also recruited by Blizzard, became Lead WoW Game Designer and is now developing Titan), they accomplished many world-firsts during their EQ time.

He discusses game balance and how you need to keep in mind that people want new and old both at the same time. He quotes Sid Meier, saying "one-third proven, one-third improved, and one-third new" is how you should look at making a new game/sequel. I like that way of thinking. Sometimes we would like 100% proven, other times we want 100% improved, and sometimes we want 100% new. Making it 1/3 of each covers everyone.

On single-player games, Pardo says he agrees with the sentiment that they are becoming an endangered species. I find this really sad because for me personally, I much prefer single-player stories and games than mutliplayer. But he has a point in that "Between pirating or the ability for people to rent games, it's hard for publishers to pour millions and millions of dollars into a game and not necessarily see the return they need to make those budgets realistic". The way the industry is now, if you make a single-player game with absolutely no connectivity at all, it will be pirated on day one and let's be honest, a significant portion of gamers will get it pirated or rent it, since when you finish it, the game's done. I don't like saying it, but Pardo is right here.

About the subscription model vs free-to-play and other business models, he says something I really agree with and I'm glad to hear it from him. I'll copy it entirely: "I'm personally a big fan of game designers being involved in the monetization design, because that's what will ultimately make for the best game. A lot of times I think those become very disconnected in the industry. Someone that's more business-oriented or production-oriented will graft a business model onto a game because that's what they think is going to drive the most revenue, but the game doesn't really support it. That's one of the things you've seen a lot with the subscription-based business model. I personally think subscription-based business models can still work, but you can't over-value your game. There's been some games in the past where they've put the subscription model on it because they thought they could get away with it. The reality is if you're going to do a subscription model you need to deliver an immense amount of premium content over time, because people are going to be looking at as 'If I'm going to be $10 or $15 per month, what am I getting month after month?' If I'm not spending enough hours in your product, it's just not going to make sense as a value proposition.

Free-to-play is a much more friendly business model for a lot of people to try out. People can try these games with no risk, and then only decide to pay for games that they really see the value in or want to spend on. I think that is a really strong model. Free-to-play is almost like a genre of business models, there are so many different ways you can apply it. I think for free-to-play to work really well it has to be deeply integrated with the game design itself. What is it that people are going to buy, and how much are you going to pay for this versus the other thing? One of the biggest issues with free-to-play models these days is the feeling that a lot of games give me: That for me to progress in this game, or to really have a deep game experience, you have to pay. That's where free-to-play gets a bad rap. But that's more the game design than the model."

Pardo also says he believe the next console generation could be the last. "Are people going to go out and pay $300 plus for a gaming system that plugs into their TV the way the last generation did? I personally think the answer is yes for one more generation. I still think that the console systems will have enough of an advantage, and people are still used to buying them as a consumer product. They'll be able to deliver really good games that I don't think you can experience yet on tablets. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the last traditional console generation and it evolves into something new after that." Well I certainly hope not. But at the same time, like I said in my previous article about Mobile gaming, maybe the "spotlight" will be on other devices but I hope we will still have our consoles, even if we're not the center of the industry.

Here's the full interview if you want to read more, especially his thoughts on tablets, gaming genres and game design.

Wii U Consoles Already On Sale On eBay

As you can see in the above picture, Wii U consoles have started to appear on eBay. Prices are currently ranging from 365$ to 620$, with other gaming websites reporting seeing some for 1000$ and more.

This sometimes happens in this industry, but most of the time it's games, not consoles. With so many shipping to gamers homes, what will happen ? Will we see Youtube videos of all the games, weeks before their release ? Will reviews appear on gaming websites before they're due ? Will forums be full of spoilers ?

And there's one other thing. Since the Wii U is supposed to boot into Miiverse, will the console even work ? I doubt Nintendo has already implemented Miiverse. I guess they can play the included game(s).

It will be interesting to see the outcome of this.

VG OST Of The Week: The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past - Sanctuary Dungeon

For this week, I picked The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past - Sanctuary Dungeon. Every soundtrack from ATTP is amazing, but this one for some reason makes me nostalgic and makes me want to play it again.

Censored Assassin's Creed 3 trailer for USA

About 20 seconds were removed from the International Assassin's Creed 3 trailer for the USA.  Should you care? Not really.

But what was in the censored scene? You can see the hero of this saga attacking and killing American revolution squad.  You can see the difference at the end of the trailers here.

UK trailer

US Trailer

The game still looks awesome and I guess Ubisoft didn't want to rise grudge against such actions and will let the American player live the scene with the context while letting people of the world understand that this is not an American vs UK war game. It will still be the fight against the Templars, which are amongst all parts of the society, in every nations.

Digital Distribution : We are family. PSN

Playstation Network is the market platform for all online Sony consoles. Including PSP, PS3 and PS Vita, they all share the same wallet and same account.

They work in a traditional way where you download full games to play them directly from the storage device. It offers a large catalog of games and movies, but we will focus on games. They do have a major difference in that their licensing lets you play on many consoles.

The Pros :

One to rule them all :
The fact that the market is shared across all consoles makes it so you can add 50$ with a prepaid card on your PS3 and spend it on the PS Vita without any trouble.

User/Console purchase :
This one is the major advantage over any other digital distribution service. Transactions are bound to your PSN account, making them easily recoverable if you change your console. But the purchased content will be available to every user on your PS3 (because unfortunately, PSP and PS Vita support only one user). Since each format could be downloaded from a PS3 to later be installed via USB to a Vita or PSP, I was unable to test if games could be transferred with USB from any PS3 without my account to my PS Vita.

A little more explanation is required to understand the advantage here. I have two PS3s at home so my girlfriend and I can play together. Games on physical discs means I'll always have to buy two games to be able to play together. With PSN policies, I could buy the same game on PSN, install it on both consoles with my account, and when my girlfriend logs on her account, she can play the game as well. That saves me the price of one new (or used) game.  Sony does limit activation of your PSN account to 5 consoles to prevent abuse and has banned consoles in the past for massive game sharing.

What you want, where you want :
Sony offers games in different formats: PS1 titles, Minis, PSP, PS Vita, PS2, and soon PS Mobile titles. Most of them can be played across different platforms . Minis for example, are playable on PS3, PSP and PS Vita. Buying the title on one console grants you the use on every other system. Sony also announced their Cross Buy offer where titles available to PS3 and PS Vita purchased on PS3 format (thus cannot be played on the PS Vita) will include a code to get the PS Vita version free.  In fact, the Cross Buy features may also work for DLC and has been introduced with the launch of LBP Vita.

Building an almost free collection :
PSN Plus is a subscription-based service offered by Sony. Available to the PS3 and soon PS Vita, it offers an Instant Game Collection. AAA titles are constantly added, from PS3's Infamous 2 to Minis like Orbit, giving you around 5 new titles each month. A nice feature is that any title you delete can be re-downloaded for free as long as it was purchased while it was free, and that your PSN Plus subscription is active.

The Cons :

Good price gone bad :
Usually, the price of digital games are either equal or a little less than the digital title found on PSN. This is OK if you don't take in consideration that it costs more to make a physical copy on store shelves, and that retail stores make about 35% profit on the title. What has gone bad is that too often, when retail prices go down, PSN does not follow. Games at retail with a 20$ price tag can often be found at 50$ on PSN.

To tax or not to tax :
I remember my first transaction on PSN in Canada had added taxes. What troubled me is that the prepaid card I bought was also taxed at the store. Sony had confirmed receiving large amounts of complaints and decided, in Canada, to remove the taxes if you bought a prepaid card (which usually aren't taxed in most stores). If any of you buy on PSN using a credit card, please let us know if you get taxed on your content.  I know taxes are still applied in other countries. So it remains unclear and taxes could come back anytime.

Where the f&+% is it :
Another bad thing, the market is not similar on all platforms. The user interface is different and the content as well.

The Interface is far from complete on PS Vita. Those using the PS3 are now used to have pictures or trailers of games, being able to add it to your cart before ending the transaction. Well there is no such thing on the PS Vita, so keep your Youtube opened to check games before you buy.

The Content could be explained in terms of platform format. You don't see what is not supported : Minis, PSP titles, PS1 titles, plenty are missing and will require that you buy it from your PS3 to install it with your USB cable to your Vita.

Update Oct 2nd: The store now has pictures for a few games!  No videos yet.

Cliff Bleszinski Leaves Epic Games

Engadget reports that Cliff Bleszinski has left Epic Games. This is very, very surprising especially since his Reddit AMA (just 19 days ago) and appearance in GameTrailers' Bonus Round, where he seemed happy with his current position and didn't seem to show any sign of retiring. I believe this is so sudden, something must have happened, though we might never know.

The Engadget post says: "Fall must be the season for sea changes in the game industry. Just weeks after BioWare's founders retired, key Epic Games veteran and Design Director Cliff Bleszinski (known to many as just CliffyB) is hanging up his hat. He simply describes it as taking a "much needed break," which makes sense when you see his development experience: he joined Epic's crew with Dare to Dream Volume One in 1993 and has nurtured virtually every major (and often minor) game franchise at the company since, including the Jazz Jackrabbit platformers, untold numbers of games in the Unreal line and most recently the Gears of War series. Bleszinski hasn't said where he's headed next, although it's hard to imagine him switching professions like the two BioWare doctors -- for many, he's synonymous with certain eras of first- and third-person shooters. Wherever he goes, we wish him the best of success."

Make no mistake, if this guy leaves the industry, it is a legend we are losing. Even more so than the doctors at BioWare. I sincerely hope he is either making his own company (I doubt it since Cliff was to Epic like Miyamoto is to Nintendo) or he's just taking a break to come back better than ever.

If you ever played any Unreal game, you played CliffyB's creations. And boy, was Unreal good.

Here's Cliff's official Wikipedia page.

PS Home Update : Games. Home Tycoon and Uproar

If you don't know what PS Home is, it's kind of Sony's Second Life platform where publishers can make "Spaces" mostly to promote their games. They are like chat rooms where you see other PS Home users and can chat and interact with them. In those spaces, you can do activities, play games, just hangout or even watch full TV shows and movies. It is loaded with micro transactions, mostly for clothes and apartment furniture to customize your character and personal spaces.

Every week, they add a truckload of new clothes for people to spend precious money customizing their avatars and every week they promote mostly their new sexy outfits and women swimsuit.

In addition to the usual swimsuits and all other additions to the PS Home mall, there are more and more games added. At first, they were mostly promotional. For example, Infamous had a "Target Practice" mini game where you could win Cole's outfit. Among other games were Dead Nation, Little Big Planet, Mod Nation Racer, Resistance. Even Red Bull had games.

But since a few months, we've seen more original games announced and launched like tank battle "Salt Shooter" (actually this one has been launched for years) and "Aurora" where the latest update lets you fly around in blimps for a tag game with friends.

Today is the launch of one of them : Home Tycoon by Hellfire Games. When I played a lot of SimCity 2000 (in 1994), I hoped the game would eventually let us roam our city, chase robbers, and actually be a little like a virtual world created by you.

More than 15 years later, Home Tycoon lets you pretty much do that. You can build your city a bit like SimCity and after it offers you activities and mini games such as driving around or taking out fires.  It's free to play, but I haven't tried it yet to see if there are micro transaction to add activities or such a thing. Here is the small launch trailer that gives you an idea of what it looks like.

Another big content publisher in Home is Lockwood. They have a few spaces and they just announced their next Free to Play game called UPROAR.  A Team Based 3rd person shooter.  Don't expect top notch graphics as it uses the PS Home engine after all. Here is a small peak at what the game will look like.

Extra Life 2012 : Raising Money for the kids

Some of you already know that on October the 20th I'll be doing a 24h Gameathon to raise money for Opération Enfant Soleil. I'm going to Live stream the event starting at 8AM EST on Google + Hang Out on Air and should also be on my YouTube Channel.

So far I've raised 2/3 of my objective with 80$. Thanks to two extremely generous donators. I still have 40$ (or more) to raise. I am giving donators something in exchange of every 5$ donation : The right to choose a game I'll play for 1h from every game I own. The list will be given at the end of this post.

There are many ways to help:

First might be the easiest, but also the most important :
Making a donation to "Opération Enfant Soleil" is easy and fun : follow the link SUPPORT ME on my Extra Life page:

Remember, for every 5$ you can choose a game that I will play for one hour. If you don't want to choose a game you don't have to. Don't restrain from making a donation because of that.  If you don't know what to choose, you can let me choose for you, or I can guide you according to what you like (leave a comment or contact me). Once your donation is recorded, just leave a comment here, on my Extra Life profile page or by any other way you may have to reach me.

The second way is to join the gameathon.
Joining the team still lets you choose the child support organisation you want to raise money for. It's 24 hours straight up of games. The games you want, the platform you want and where you want (like in your living room, ain't that great?) follow this link and Join the team :

The third way is to share this blog page and challenge friends and family to donate or participate. The more, the merrier.

The fourth way is to watch the Live Stream on YouTube or Hangout on air (Google plus) on Oct. 20th 2012 starting at 8h00 am Eastern Time up until 8:00am on Sunday the 21st.  Look for StainedPupil on YouTube, or wait for the official link in October. The stream will be part French part English. During the live stream, donation will still be opened. What will be fun is that viewers can send me challenges in exchange for a donation if the challenge is completed.

So here is the current list of games you can choose from.
