PS Plus Offer: Dec 11th

Here it goes again, Free stuff for PS Plus members. It's been a while since I updated on this subject because of my other overwhelming tasks, but here it is today!

What do PS Plus members receive this week after last week's Bioshock 2?

Well first, what PS Plus members do NOT receive according to the official PlayStation Blog announcement is Big Sky: Infinity. The trailer of the game states that it will be free for a limited time, advertising Instant Game Collection. Here's the trailer announcing the freebie.

The game is coming out tomorrow if we look at The Drop post on the PlayStation Blog; they even have the trailer claiming the free game for PS Plus. If we look at today's PSN Plus offer announcement post on the forum, there's no mention of the game. Blog admins gave the reason that it will only be for EU members, the video was then removed from the US blog. That was one bad advertising scheme.

Now, here's what you get for free :

Following the release of a great fighting game a few weeks back (KOF XIII), now it's time for another great franchise. Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition is finally here for free. Adding it to the thin PS Plus fighting games that were ever given for free.

Another game that is a PSN exclusive (excluding PC) puzzler is getting the free treatment as well, but only for 1 week. After that, it will be gone so grab it now even if you don't plan on playing it right now so you will be able to redownload it for free later. The game is Rochard. This looks like a nice Side-Scrolling Platformer based on moving things around with a gravity gun.

PSN Plus : Oct 6 Offer

Here we go again this week with a new free game. Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition will be free in today's Store Update.

In addition to this free game, PSN Plus members get nice discounts. Portal 2 is at 13,99$ (6$ off) and its expansion In motion releases today, adding PS Move support as well as new levels for 6,99$ (3$ off).

When Vikings Attack is another new game where you throw stuff at other players. It is Cross Buy (PS3 / PS Vita) and Cross Play. Plus members get 3$ off and can get it for 6.99$.

Finally, the last rebate is on Absolute Supercars. You can get it at 7.99$ instead of the regular 9.99$
There sure are interesting deals in there.

I'm probably getting Portal 2, but I think I can find it used at a cheaper price. Chances are that I'll get When Vikings Attack as soon as it's out, as a cross buy game, so I can get it on my Vita and PS3s.

This Is What Horrible PR Is Like

Europe Playstation owners are mighty pissed right now, and for good reason. The new PS3 patch did something no one thought Sony would ever do. Place an advertisement in the XMB. There is now an icon for the game Singstar sitting on top of the Game category, bigger than any other icons and you can't delete it or move it. It's there and there's nothing you can do about it. Naturally, people started to Google for a way to get rid of it and they end up on Playstation Europe Official's blog page, where they are essentially told by the PR Rep, Nina Scherer, to suck it up.

Here are some of the most WTF replies I've ever seen from a Public Relations person (you can click on the first image to see it on its original size and then click through to see all of them one by one):

As someone says later in the thread:

She then comes back to apologize for some of her comments:

But then another questions if she really means "We will definitely take all of your feedback on board".

I seriously hope this is not the kind of image Sony wants to have for its Customer Service Relations.

Review : Retro City Rampage

Platform : PS3 / PS Vita (Cross Buy) and PC/Steam
*Soon Available on : WiiWare and XBLA
Developer : VBlank Entertainment
Price :14,99$
Type : Top Down Shooter
Time played : 6 hours / Not finished yet

At first glance, this could look like another game made in 8-bit graphics for simplicity.  That couldn't be further from the truth. It's a jewel of reference and satire to the 80-90's era from the beginning to the end.  The game has not even started that you can enjoy those references. Retro City Rampage, or RCR is a reference to River City Ransom, a great NES game. The art on the cover makes reference to Robert Zemeckis' Back to the Future Series. The game itself is a complex stew of so much reference that it requires a lot of skills to be able to make it into such a cohesive game, but this strength might also be a weakness.

If you have not a clue of what all those references means in there, you will definitely not enjoy this game as much as someone who does.  It's always enjoyable to stumble upon a quote such as "It's Letter Time"  taken from Video and Arcade Top 10 Canadian TV show and understand that reference. If not, you just wonder why it's there, at that place. While the game is surely enjoyable, the 15$ price tag is kind of high for this type of game... Here is some example of just a few of the references you might or might not know. Can you explain where they come from or what they mean? Note that I have taken more than 100 screenshots of those references so far.

Nicholas Picholas was the host of V&A Top 10

You got Story Missions that let progress in the crazy story where you want to become a super criminal. It also gives power ups and get you through many of the game mechanics.  The missions often use humour to get you through. For example there's a Chasing mission you get in every GTA like games. You need to follow someone in car without being spotted. When it starts, you tell yourself that it's so slow you might as well walk and walking you go. While pursuing the car, you must get coffee along the way so you won't fall asleep of boredom. You also get Arcade Challenges that consists in killing or breaking as much stuff as possible in a limited time.  This gives you the chance of uploading your score to the Leaderboard for bragging rights with your friend.

Now about the game mechanics.  It plays mostly like a top down shooter. You control the character with the left analog stick (or d-pad, for a retro feel) and shoot in any direction with the right analog stick.  I guess PC version will use AWSD and mouse to do so.  You can jump and pick up object and throw them as well. Finally you can get in cars, bike and other transports to move around town. There is a lot of stores where you can customise your character and buy weapons, tools, restore health,  and get power ups. Cheat codes (That's retro too) are written all over the places on wall for you to find. In addition to this, there's hidden items to find like Hidden Packages.

There's a Free Play mode as well where you get to move around town without any story missions, full of cash to buy everything you want. It's just a fun way of killing time and get those trophies as well.

Conclusion :

It's definitely a fun game, but its true strength is its melting pot of references. It's easy to understand and to play. It might not be worth the current 15$ price tag for everyone, but the more you have been into games, the more you'll get value from the references and the satire in the game. If you own it on PS3/PS Vita, know that it's a Cross Buy/ Cross Play game, so that adds  value to the game as well. You pay it once and can play on both system. There's a cloud save function that lets you continue your game from a system to the other without any pain.

Developer Talks About PS4

was going through my daily dose of news gathering when I stumbled into an interesting comment from a developer on the Official Playstation blog.

The developer is Alexey Menshikov Beatshapers, maker of BreakQuest. BreakQuest is a Minis game and can be played on PS Vita, PSP, and PS3.

When someone told that Beatshapers should start focusing on bigger games (instead of PS Minis), his answer seems quite revealing. He states that they are shifting to PS Vita/PS3 games and aiming for PS4.

Whatever that means it sure seems that even for devs the PS4 is coming sooner than we might expect.  The fact that it has been posted on Official Playstation's blog is not a small deal. We know that the big console companies often make sure to filter any comments on future consoles.  This one went through like butter in the pan.

Regarding the other part of the comment, talking about an announcment in the beginning of 2013, I won't expect much. They do have an unannounced Minis still in development so that might be it, but who knows...

Gaikai's New Website Teases Upcoming PS Releases On Its Service

We know Gaikai (one of the two big cloud-gaming services, the other being OnLive) was recently bought by Sony Computer Entertainment, but we haven't got much information yet as to what they're going to bring to the PS family. Well, their new website might be teasing some PS3 games we could be streaming soon, like Killzone, Uncharted, God of War, LittleBigPlanet and inFAMOUS. The other images are too blurry for us to know the game they are representing.

This could also mean nothing, because Gaikai now being a Sony member, they can show whatever Sony franchise they want, regardless of if the platform's going to host it or not. Still, we're quite interested.

Know what the best would be ? Complete PS1 and PS2 library. That might not happen as there are so many IPs and publishers would need to all get on board but hey, one can dream ? Maybe in the future.

Censored Assassin's Creed 3 trailer for USA

About 20 seconds were removed from the International Assassin's Creed 3 trailer for the USA.  Should you care? Not really.

But what was in the censored scene? You can see the hero of this saga attacking and killing American revolution squad.  You can see the difference at the end of the trailers here.

UK trailer

US Trailer

The game still looks awesome and I guess Ubisoft didn't want to rise grudge against such actions and will let the American player live the scene with the context while letting people of the world understand that this is not an American vs UK war game. It will still be the fight against the Templars, which are amongst all parts of the society, in every nations.

PS Home Update : Games. Home Tycoon and Uproar

If you don't know what PS Home is, it's kind of Sony's Second Life platform where publishers can make "Spaces" mostly to promote their games. They are like chat rooms where you see other PS Home users and can chat and interact with them. In those spaces, you can do activities, play games, just hangout or even watch full TV shows and movies. It is loaded with micro transactions, mostly for clothes and apartment furniture to customize your character and personal spaces.

Every week, they add a truckload of new clothes for people to spend precious money customizing their avatars and every week they promote mostly their new sexy outfits and women swimsuit.

In addition to the usual swimsuits and all other additions to the PS Home mall, there are more and more games added. At first, they were mostly promotional. For example, Infamous had a "Target Practice" mini game where you could win Cole's outfit. Among other games were Dead Nation, Little Big Planet, Mod Nation Racer, Resistance. Even Red Bull had games.

But since a few months, we've seen more original games announced and launched like tank battle "Salt Shooter" (actually this one has been launched for years) and "Aurora" where the latest update lets you fly around in blimps for a tag game with friends.

Today is the launch of one of them : Home Tycoon by Hellfire Games. When I played a lot of SimCity 2000 (in 1994), I hoped the game would eventually let us roam our city, chase robbers, and actually be a little like a virtual world created by you.

More than 15 years later, Home Tycoon lets you pretty much do that. You can build your city a bit like SimCity and after it offers you activities and mini games such as driving around or taking out fires.  It's free to play, but I haven't tried it yet to see if there are micro transaction to add activities or such a thing. Here is the small launch trailer that gives you an idea of what it looks like.

Another big content publisher in Home is Lockwood. They have a few spaces and they just announced their next Free to Play game called UPROAR.  A Team Based 3rd person shooter.  Don't expect top notch graphics as it uses the PS Home engine after all. Here is a small peak at what the game will look like.

Extra Life 2012 : Raising Money for the kids

Some of you already know that on October the 20th I'll be doing a 24h Gameathon to raise money for Opération Enfant Soleil. I'm going to Live stream the event starting at 8AM EST on Google + Hang Out on Air and should also be on my YouTube Channel.

So far I've raised 2/3 of my objective with 80$. Thanks to two extremely generous donators. I still have 40$ (or more) to raise. I am giving donators something in exchange of every 5$ donation : The right to choose a game I'll play for 1h from every game I own. The list will be given at the end of this post.

There are many ways to help:

First might be the easiest, but also the most important :
Making a donation to "Opération Enfant Soleil" is easy and fun : follow the link SUPPORT ME on my Extra Life page:

Remember, for every 5$ you can choose a game that I will play for one hour. If you don't want to choose a game you don't have to. Don't restrain from making a donation because of that.  If you don't know what to choose, you can let me choose for you, or I can guide you according to what you like (leave a comment or contact me). Once your donation is recorded, just leave a comment here, on my Extra Life profile page or by any other way you may have to reach me.

The second way is to join the gameathon.
Joining the team still lets you choose the child support organisation you want to raise money for. It's 24 hours straight up of games. The games you want, the platform you want and where you want (like in your living room, ain't that great?) follow this link and Join the team :

The third way is to share this blog page and challenge friends and family to donate or participate. The more, the merrier.

The fourth way is to watch the Live Stream on YouTube or Hangout on air (Google plus) on Oct. 20th 2012 starting at 8h00 am Eastern Time up until 8:00am on Sunday the 21st.  Look for StainedPupil on YouTube, or wait for the official link in October. The stream will be part French part English. During the live stream, donation will still be opened. What will be fun is that viewers can send me challenges in exchange for a donation if the challenge is completed.

Sony unveils new PS3 model (250GB and 500GB)

GameSpot just released an article confirming the rumor about a new PS3 model, here is the article in its entirety:

Sony today unveiled a new PS3 model at its pre-Tokyo Game Show briefing today in Japan. The new PS3 will have a new body and design: it is approximately 20 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter than the current PS3.

The new PS3 will be available in 250GB and 500GB models, and will be available in black and white colours. The black model will be released on October 4, while the white model will be released on November 22.

Sony announced the 250GB model of the new PS3 will cost 24,980 Yen. Sony did not reveal pricing for the 500GB model. Sony also announced an Everybody's Golf 6 PS3 pack, which will launch on November 22 with a white PS3 250GB model for 25,980 Yen.

Sony revealed the 250GB PS3 will be available on September 25 in North America for US$269.99 as part of a limited edition bundle featuring Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception Game of the Year edition, and a voucher for more than US$30 worth of bonus digital content for the title Dust 514.

The new 500GB PS3 will be available in a limited edition Assassin's Creed III bundle on October 30 in North America. Sony did not reveal pricing for this model.

Elsewhere in the conference, Sony revealed its PlayStationPlus subscription service will become available for PlayStation Vita in November this year. Different subscription options will be available in each territory, including a 30-day plan (Japan: 500 Yen, Asia: HK$38); a 90-day plan (North America: US$17.99, Europe: €14.99); and a 365-day plan (Japan: 5,000 Yen, Asia: HK$233, North America: US$49.99, Europe: €49.99).

According to Sony, PS Vita will integrate all of the PS3's entertainment options with PlayStation Plus.

Sony also announced it will be opening up PlayStation mobile stores all around the world (Japan, North America, EU, and Australia) later this year, and that its PlayStation Network service has reached 2.4 billion downloads worldwide to date.

GameSpot will continue to update this story as news comes in.
