Rebooting During 5GB Wii U Update Bricking Consoles

Be careful when doing your Wii U 5GB Update. There's been reports all over the Internet of people finding their console was bricked after rebooting. Since the update takes hours, many thought maybe the download had stopped, so rebooting is normally the common first thing to do. Not in this case.

Nintendo posted about it on their Facebook page as well:

  1. That is really bad programming from Nintendo's part. They should really make the update a 2-3 step process:
    1- Download only
2- Install new software in parallel, reboot with flag to use the new one
3- Once rebooted successfully, replace old firmware with new (now tested) one.

The concept of dual BIOS has been around for 5+ years on PC; yes it costs a bit more (perhaps 5-10$), but it would prevent most of the failures.
